Remembering Araw ng Kagitingan: Honoring Filipino Valor in World War II

There are times in history that embody a nation's bravery, tenacity, and selflessness. The Philippines observes April 9 as Araw ng Kagitingan, or the Day of Valor, to honor one such occasion. This day acts as a somber reminder of the incredible bravery and unwavering determination of Filipino combatants in World War II.

Filipinos have a particular place in their hearts for Araw ng Kagitingan because it honors the bravery shown by our heroes in the face of insurmountable circumstances. The Fall of Bataan, which occurred on April 9, 1942, was a significant event in Philippine history. For months, despite being greatly outnumbered and outgunned, American and Filipino men bravely defended Bataan from the Japanese invasion. They fought with unrelenting courage and resolve in the face of extreme challenges including starvation, disease, and tiredness.

Following Bataan's capitulation, thousands of American and Filipino POWs were forcibly marched to prison camps and subjected to unimaginable atrocities during the notorious Bataan Death March. Throughout the difficult voyage, several of them died, but their spirit of fortitude never wavered.

Araw ng Kagitingan honors the resilience of the Filipino soul while also remembering a tragic period of pain and loss. It serves as a reminder of the costs paid by our ancestors to preserve democracy, freedom, and national sovereignty. Their bravery urges us to preserve the ideals of bravery, patriotism, and solidarity in remembrance of them and acts as an eternal inspiration for future generations.

As we commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan today, let us pause to consider the heroic legacy left to us by those who bravely battled and lost their lives in defense of our nation. In remembrance of their bravery, let us work toward a more equitable and better society that values the liberties they battled to protect. May their bravery continue to encourage us to persevere in the face of difficulty, as they did on that terrible day in Bataan, and may their sacrifice never be forgotten.

EMPOWER A COMMUNITY

Community-based research offers a special way to find out what makes a place tick. It involves immersing oneself in the fabric of a community, listening to its tales, and comprehending its needs rather than merely gathering facts. My personal community-based research experience has been fulfilling and illuminating, providing insights that textbooks could never convey.

Above all, community-based research made me realize how crucial it is to establish rapport and trust. I took some time to get to know the community members before diving into the nuances of the study process. I made a conscious effort to build relationships, whether it was by striking up informal talks at get-togethers or taking part in neighborhood activities. This trusting relationship set the stage for productive cooperation all the way through the research project.

The chance to interact directly with community people was one of the most memorable parts of performing community-based research. Instead of simply seeing things from a distance, I made an effort to get opinions and insights from people with different experiences and backgrounds. I learned a great deal about the difficulties, goals, and desires of the community through focus groups, interviews, and interactive workshops.

Community-based research was not without its difficulties, though. It took skill and compassion to negotiate the intricate social dynamics and power structures within the community. Conflicting interests and points of view occasionally emerged, requiring cautious compromise and consensus-building. Furthermore, real obstacles that required innovative solutions were presented by logistical roadblocks like scarce resources and bureaucratic procedures.

The benefits of community-based research were numerous despite these difficulties. The inclusion of community people' views and experiences in our research resulted in more nuanced and significant conclusions. Our research produced information that wasn't limited to scholarly publications; instead, it influenced real-world projects and actions meant to meet the needs of the community.

In addition, the process of carrying out community-based research involved a voyage of introspection and personal development. It made me face my own prejudices and presumptions and helped me to understand the richness and variety of human experiences. It also gave me a strong feeling of empathy and a dedication to social justice, which motivated me to fight for significant change both inside and outside of the community.

To sum up, working on community-based research was a life-changing opportunity that went beyond academic confines. It helped me understand the importance of sincere participation, teamwork, and empathy when tackling difficult social challenges. It was a voyage of empowerment, connection, and discovery that went beyond a simple study approach and left a lasting impression on the community as well as myself.

Honoring Tradition: Highschool Day at ISNHS

I can’t help but to think about the times when we were supposed to celebrate Highschool Day as students.

On foundation Day at Ilocos Sur National Highschool, excitement and eagerness were in the air on campus. There was a hint of a remarkable day ahead in the fresh morning air. I couldn't help but feel proud to be a part of such a dynamic community as youngsters poured onto the school grounds, bursting with energy and wearing a clean uniform.

I was running late when people at my school gathered around the school to prepare the first part of the day. It was a parade — a long walk outside the school. It was tiring since the route we were walking to was actually kind of far from the school and it was hot as hell.

After that parade, we had time to rest to prepare our energy and confidence to perform. It was a competition among girls and boys in grade 7, 8, 9, and 10. I found myself taking part in a spontaneous dance-off near the main stage. With music blaring from the speakers and students showcasing their best moves, it was a moment of pure joy and camaraderie. In that moment, it didn't matter who won or lost – what mattered was the sense of unity and belonging that permeated the air. I joined my friends in cheering as they dance their butts off. The energy was infectious, and even those who weren’t directly involved couldn’t help but get swept up in the competitive spirit. It was so much fun having to watch them despite the crowdedness. Even though I, together with my girls, didn’t win the competition, at least the boys from our age did.

Second, Cultural Tradition. Valentine's Day has become firmly embedded in many cultures across the world over time. Its cultural significance as a day of love is enhanced by the exchange of presents, cards, flowers, and romantic gestures during its celebration.

Third, Strengthening Relationships. Valentine's Day gives couples a chance to deepen their relationship by showing each other how much they care and how much they appreciate each other with considerate gifts and deeds of kindness.

Fourth, it can also contribute to Economic Impact. The event has a huge economic impact on the world economy, from the sales of greeting cards, flowers, and chocolates to the money made by restaurants and other businesses offering special Valentine's Day specials.

Fifth, Expression of Emotions. Valentine's Day gives a lot of people an opportunity to express feelings that they might not normally express or show in their daily lives. It enables people to express their gratitude and sentiments for their loved ones honestly.

Sixth, Romantic Tradition: Valentine's Day has come to represent romanticism, encouraging individuals to go above and beyond to show their loved ones how much they mean to them. On this day, extravagant displays of affection are not only welcomed but also urged.

And lastly, Cultural Phenomenon: Valentine's Day has shaped social views of love, romance, and relationships through its representation in popular culture, literature, and film.

Valentine's Day is significant because it can help people connect, spread love and kindness, and remember how important it is to show affection for one another, even though some people may think it is too commercialized or only for romantic couples.

Estudyantepreneur: Another Event to Reminisce

As I made my way through the crowded area, I saw some things that captured my eyes. Some booths that I honestly think were boring and booths that I feel like it is worth to spend my time to.

There were laptops set-ups at the front which features old computer games. I actually didn’t even bother to look at it for a time enough to know about it.

There were also food corners that sell Empanadas and other snacks. I wasn’t hungry that time so once again, I didn’t bother to look at it. But the snacks were good, my classmates told me.

I saw a booth which they showcased their services such as Basic Repair, Printing, and Laminating.

Only one booth I find very interesting. I was captivated by the film booth. I, together with my friends, think that the time we spent to watch the film entitled “Under the Tree Trunks” was worth it. Just for us to watch the film made by Grade 8 students, first, we waited for minutes because there were still people who were watching it. When finally it was our turn, I really think that we were just wasting our time. But I realized I made a mistake. The film was good, from start to finish. I felt goosebumps while watching it. It is very visible that they inserted effort into the project. I’m not in a place to say something like this but I can say that the students who participated onto the project have potential. Whoever the students are, I am proud of them. After the film viewing, we, Grade 10s, said our opinions about it. “Nag mayat jy film” “Ang touching ng film” “Talo pa tayo ng Grade 8”, These were just some few positive feedbacks that were uttered by my classmates. We all agree that it was the best out of the rest.

As I stepped to leave the event, I can only bring my memories with me. I might not be able to learn things connected with ICT but at least I gained another interesting experience. That film really had impact on me. I realized that even when you are young, you are capable on doing big things. Estudyantepreneur highlights students showcasing their skills and talents.

WE CONNECT, ILOCOS SUR.

There are many different reasons why people attend festivals. Festivals provide an opportunity to experience many cultures firsthand, take in entertainment, mingle, commemorate milestones, consume delectable food and beverages, value art and craft, pick up new skills, and just have fun. Festivals offer a wide range of activities that appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds, whether they are there to take in the lively environment, make new friends, or simply get away from normal life. Ultimately, festivals function as social gatherings that bring joy, excitement, and enrichment to participants, making them valued occasions in communities around the world.

The significance of the celebration of the Ilocos Sur Festival, like many other cultural festivals, lies in several aspects. First, Cultural Preservation. The traditional dances, music, artwork, and food that are a part of these festivals contribute to the preservation and promotion of the area's cultural history. It gives residents a chance to get back in touch with their heritage and offers a channel for transferring customs to upcoming generations. Second, Tourism and Economy. Festivals attract visitors from around the country as well as from abroad. The money spent by these tourists on hotel, dining, gifts, transportation, and other related services stimulates the local economy. It also raises Ilocos Sur's profile as a tourist destination.
Third, Community Spirit. Festivals promote a feeling of togetherness and communal pride. They unite people to celebrate common customs and values, despite disparities in background. Locals use this time to connect, mingle, and build links within their communities. Fourth, Promotion of Arts and Culture: These events frequently feature exhibitions of cultural items, concerts by musicians and artists, and displays of regional arts and crafts. The community's creative traditions and artistic traditions are supported by the exposure of local artists and artisans. Lastly, Education and Awareness: Ilocos Sur's history, culture, and way of life are made accessible to both locals and tourists through festivals. They act as instructional tools for comprehending and valuing the region's cultural variety.

All things considered, the Ilocos Sur Festival, like any other cultural event, is extremely important for maintaining cultural legacy, boosting travel and economic development, encouraging communal harmony, supporting artistic expression, and informing the public about the region's rich cultural diversity.

Are you satisfied?

First semester done, another one about to open. Time flies fast indeed. Nothing’s new actually, I have done the same things that I did during the last quarter.

Am I satisfied? Of course not! I have never been satisfied with everything that I do. Which makes me sad whenever I think about it at random times. Remembering the promises I thought I had scratched on the stones but actually it was written on waves, I’m very disappointed. I know that I don’t have the right to be dissatisfied since it was myself whom created it. I never liked it this way. But I was not determined enough to fix it either.

There are few things that I was proud of doing this 2nd quarter. First is having to showcase my acting. I have tried acting last school year and I can say that it was something that made me somehow proud of myself. I don’t know if it created some impact on my teachers and classmates, but I guess it did since they chose me as one of the main characters to act on our practicum this school year. I did the acting again. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears for that. Just for one performance, we dismiss ourselves late every practice when we feel a bit of satisfaction on every session. Second is having to show what I’ve got in terms of art. Art has been with me ever since I was young. I find it very soothing and I enjoy every stroke that I make. Looking at final results after trusting the process is indeed satisfying. And lastly, having to join extra curricular activities. I joined editorial cartooning but I don’t think that I can keep up. Those are just some mini achievements for me.

It’s kind of tiring  making the same promises over and over again. And not fulfilling it over and over as well. Looking back on my performance this quarter, I can’t say that I did great. I can’t confidently utter that I am one of the awardees last year because I genuinely think that I might get removed as one.

Others notice how I overthink about it often. They check up on me every time I tell them that I’m not feeling well. And I’m so glad that they are always there for me. I call them ‘my arcs.’ My circle of friends. They are the ones who lessened the pain I endured from this quarter. They motivated me in times that I was close on losing my hands on the bar. When I was at my lowest. They made my environment safe somehow. I can’t help but to smile every time I’m with them. “Sabay sabay tayong babagsak”, our favorite line whenever we feel like something is wrong. But at the end of the day, it’s always been “Congratulations, we’ve made it!”

Furthermore, even though I am tired of my unending promises, I will still make new ones. Who knows? I might actually fulfill them this time. I promise to not be a procrastinator and a crammer this 2nd semester. My nose is actually stretching right now as I write this. Kidding aside, I know that there are a lot of circumstances that I will face again. I am Hessah Gem Lopez, and I am going to be better this time.

Jose Rizal

Jose Rizal, often regarded as the national hero of the Philippines, made significant contributions that greatly influenced the nation's quest for independence during the late 19th century. Rizal's most profound impact lay in his literary works, particularly his two novels, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." These novels exposed the social injustices and abuses prevalent under Spanish colonial rule, awakening a sense of national identity and unity among Filipinos. Through his writings, Rizal encouraged critical thinking and inspired a movement for societal reform, laying the foundation for the eventual pursuit of independence.

Rizal's advocacy extended beyond literature to his involvement in various socio-political activities. He became an influential figure in the Propaganda Movement, a group of Filipino intellectuals seeking reforms through peaceful means. Rizal aimed to elevate the status of Filipinos by pushing for equality, education, and representation. His writings and actions sparked discussions about nationalism and inspired Filipinos to challenge the oppressive Spanish regime. Rizal's commitment to peaceful resistance set an enduring example for future generations of Filipinos striving for freedom and self-determination.

Ultimately, Jose Rizal's greatest distribution to the Philippines was his sacrificial commitment to the cause of independence. His fervent belief in the power of education and enlightenment paved the way for a collective Filipino consciousness that transcended regional differences. Rizal's martyrdom in 1896, when he was executed by the Spanish authorities, further fueled the flames of nationalism, solidifying his legacy as a symbol of Filipino resilience and the struggle for liberty. His life and works continue to inspire generations, serving as a reminder of the enduring spirit that led to the Philippines' eventual independence.

Magic of Christmas

When I was younger, I used to wish that time would fly by quickly enough to bring back the Christmas Season. I can still recall the days where we traveled just to celebrate Christmas at my parents' hometown. As soon as we arrive, they greet us with an advanced Merry Christmas with warm smiles on their faces and assist us with our belongings. The moments when I was beyond excited to consume the foods that my family had prepared for Noche Buena. Agar-agar by my nanay was my all-time favorite food and still is. The time when I was waiting for someone to give me a present whether it is a toy or just simply money. However, back then I valued materials more than money. Simply because I was just a child, I wasn't really aware of things before. The time where I was all out to burst my energy  when the time hits 12:00 in the morning because once the clock strikes 12 a.m, I'll be greeting each and everyone a Merry Christmas. It feels nostalgic to reminisce about those days. Where I was just a happy kiddo, no sadness, no problems at all, and nothing to think about and just enjoying the flow of life. But now, I don't have any idea where it all went. It took a snap to clear all the years and boom, life told me that you're already a 15-year old, with a miserable life and can't even enjoy Christmas like you used to. How I wished I could bring back the time.

Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmas is basically a festival of giving and love. Friends and family get together to enjoy meals together, trade gifts, and make lifelong memories. Giving gifts is a symbolic act that reflects the warmth and kindness that define the holiday season. It is a season of happiness, warmth, and togetherness that unites individuals. This festive season, celebrated on December 25th each year, holds a special place in the hearts of millions around the world.

Growing up, I haven't really experienced those moments where you and your family make the house shine with Christmas decorations. Those presents that other kids wish for their parents. The socks that should be hung before you sleep because when you wake up, you'll be expecting something from Santa Claus, but we all really know it's from our parents.. I've realized that I haven't got to experience the Christmas experience of other kids but rather I've experienced a very simple one. It might've lacked a lot of things but I'm sure those times were the happiest moments of my life. But now, I really don't know what happened. I can't force myself to not compare the times before and the days now. Looking back to it, I can really tell the difference, it's just that I'm a bit confused. I actually don't know if it's just the year that makes it unhappy or it's already me who's unhappy. A question that has been circulating in my mind for almost 3 years now. Nonetheless, I wish that each and everyone of us finds the spark of Christmas once again.
