Are you satisfied?

First semester done, another one about to open. Time flies fast indeed. Nothing’s new actually, I have done the same things that I did during the last quarter.

Am I satisfied? Of course not! I have never been satisfied with everything that I do. Which makes me sad whenever I think about it at random times. Remembering the promises I thought I had scratched on the stones but actually it was written on waves, I’m very disappointed. I know that I don’t have the right to be dissatisfied since it was myself whom created it. I never liked it this way. But I was not determined enough to fix it either.

There are few things that I was proud of doing this 2nd quarter. First is having to showcase my acting. I have tried acting last school year and I can say that it was something that made me somehow proud of myself. I don’t know if it created some impact on my teachers and classmates, but I guess it did since they chose me as one of the main characters to act on our practicum this school year. I did the acting again. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears for that. Just for one performance, we dismiss ourselves late every practice when we feel a bit of satisfaction on every session. Second is having to show what I’ve got in terms of art. Art has been with me ever since I was young. I find it very soothing and I enjoy every stroke that I make. Looking at final results after trusting the process is indeed satisfying. And lastly, having to join extra curricular activities. I joined editorial cartooning but I don’t think that I can keep up. Those are just some mini achievements for me.

It’s kind of tiring  making the same promises over and over again. And not fulfilling it over and over as well. Looking back on my performance this quarter, I can’t say that I did great. I can’t confidently utter that I am one of the awardees last year because I genuinely think that I might get removed as one.

Others notice how I overthink about it often. They check up on me every time I tell them that I’m not feeling well. And I’m so glad that they are always there for me. I call them ‘my arcs.’ My circle of friends. They are the ones who lessened the pain I endured from this quarter. They motivated me in times that I was close on losing my hands on the bar. When I was at my lowest. They made my environment safe somehow. I can’t help but to smile every time I’m with them. “Sabay sabay tayong babagsak”, our favorite line whenever we feel like something is wrong. But at the end of the day, it’s always been “Congratulations, we’ve made it!”

Furthermore, even though I am tired of my unending promises, I will still make new ones. Who knows? I might actually fulfill them this time. I promise to not be a procrastinator and a crammer this 2nd semester. My nose is actually stretching right now as I write this. Kidding aside, I know that there are a lot of circumstances that I will face again. I am Hessah Gem Lopez, and I am going to be better this time.

Jose Rizal

Jose Rizal, often regarded as the national hero of the Philippines, made significant contributions that greatly influenced the nation's quest for independence during the late 19th century. Rizal's most profound impact lay in his literary works, particularly his two novels, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." These novels exposed the social injustices and abuses prevalent under Spanish colonial rule, awakening a sense of national identity and unity among Filipinos. Through his writings, Rizal encouraged critical thinking and inspired a movement for societal reform, laying the foundation for the eventual pursuit of independence.

Rizal's advocacy extended beyond literature to his involvement in various socio-political activities. He became an influential figure in the Propaganda Movement, a group of Filipino intellectuals seeking reforms through peaceful means. Rizal aimed to elevate the status of Filipinos by pushing for equality, education, and representation. His writings and actions sparked discussions about nationalism and inspired Filipinos to challenge the oppressive Spanish regime. Rizal's commitment to peaceful resistance set an enduring example for future generations of Filipinos striving for freedom and self-determination.

Ultimately, Jose Rizal's greatest distribution to the Philippines was his sacrificial commitment to the cause of independence. His fervent belief in the power of education and enlightenment paved the way for a collective Filipino consciousness that transcended regional differences. Rizal's martyrdom in 1896, when he was executed by the Spanish authorities, further fueled the flames of nationalism, solidifying his legacy as a symbol of Filipino resilience and the struggle for liberty. His life and works continue to inspire generations, serving as a reminder of the enduring spirit that led to the Philippines' eventual independence.
